The science of molecular hydrogen, honestly

An educational note from Yolanda. This article describes published research on molecular hydrogen in general. It is not a claim about any Yolanda product, and it is not medical advice.
What molecular hydrogen is
Molecular hydrogen (H₂) is the smallest molecule there is: two hydrogen atoms, no colour, no taste. It can be dissolved into water in small amounts, which is what "hydrogen-rich" or "hydrogen-infused" water means. Nothing mystical: ordinary water, with a gas quietly dissolved in it.
Why researchers became interested
For most of scientific history, hydrogen was considered biologically inert. That changed in 2007, when a team at Nippon Medical School published a study in Nature Medicine reporting that hydrogen selectively reduced the most cytotoxic reactive oxygen species in cells, while leaving the reactive species the body uses for normal signalling untouched [1]. That single paper turned hydrogen into a research field: hundreds of studies have followed, across cells, animals and, increasingly, people.
What human studies have explored
Oxidative stress. Because of that original finding, much of the research examines how drinking hydrogen-rich water relates to markers of oxidative stress. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled the available randomised trials in healthy adults and examined oxidative-stress and antioxidant-capacity markers after exercise; it found signals worth studying further, from a small evidence base of six studies and 76 participants [2]. A separate randomised, double-blind trial in healthy adults reported effects on inflammatory responses in blood cells over four weeks [3].
Exercise and recovery. Sports scientists have tested hydrogen-rich water around training: sprint sessions, endurance work, recovery windows. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses have examined its relationship with fatigue, aerobic capacity and physical performance in healthy adults [4][5]. Individual trials, including in elite athletes, have looked at muscle performance and soreness across hard training days [6]. Results vary by study design and dose, and reviewers consistently describe the evidence as early.
Wider areas. Smaller clinical studies have explored hydrogen-rich water in relation to metabolic markers, including lipid and glucose measures [7][8]. These are areas of active research interest rather than settled science.
The honest state of the evidence
Here is the part many brands skip. The studies above are real, peer-reviewed and PubMed-indexed, and the field is genuinely active. They are also mostly small, short, and varied in method. A 2024 systematic review summarised it plainly: preliminary results are encouraging, and larger, more rigorous studies are needed to substantiate them [9]. That is the accurate sentence, and we would rather print it than improve on it.
Hydrogen and nanobubbles: two different things
One distinction worth keeping clear. Hydrogen is the molecule the research above is about. Nanobubbles are packaging at the molecular scale: a way of holding a gas in water as ultra-fine, stable bubbles. In Yolanda Nano Water, hydrogen is the reason the science is interesting; nanobubbles are simply how we carry it, and the barrier pouch is how we keep it there until you open the cap. The research interest belongs to hydrogen itself, not to the bubbles.
